Lunch is the ultimate collision point. When teams coordinate lunch plans openly, they create natural gathering moments that cross team boundaries. Make lunch plans visible to everyone, encourage open-seat policies at team lunches, and rotate lunch buddies across departments.
3. Design Spaces for Collision
Steve Jobs famously placed the only bathrooms at Pixar in the central atrium, forcing people from different departments to cross paths. Centralise coffee areas, create comfortable lounge spaces, and position walkways to maximise cross-traffic between teams.
4. Celebrate and Share the Wins
When serendipity leads to something valuable—a problem solved, a partnership formed, an idea sparked—share the story. These narratives reinforce the value of in-person time.
The Serendipity Mindset
Ultimately, engineering serendipity is about shifting from a productivity-first mindset to a connection-first mindset. When teams coordinate their office days with connection in mind, they transform the office from a place where work happens to a place where magic happens.
